Sustainability

Sustainability

Sustainability is at the core ethos of PALM; we aim to tread lightly on this earth, making limited production numbers on all our pieces in order to reduce our environmental impact.

At PALM we take a slower approach to fashion by using high-quality, sustainably sourced materials and producing no more than we need. All swim pieces are produced in-house in our Bali studio and are made singularly upon purchase. We adhere to the highest standards of quality and support ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices.

We believe that ethical intentions and sustainable practices, alongside design, should underline a garment's value. We work to integrate core sustainable principles with high-quality materials without compromising on the look, quality and functionality of each piece.

We aim to provide considered swimwear to the conscious customer and understand that creating each piece requires the Earth's resources and energy. Our intention is to reduce our environmental impact where possible without compromising on comfort and value.

Never compromising on quality, our materials have double the lifespan of normal swim fabric and added protection from harmful UV rays, rough surfaces and chlorine chemicals that ensure to last beyond a season.

The nylon used in our swimwear is regenerated from post-consumer waste and fishing nets. Our intent is for our swimsuits to be loved, lived in, built on and kept for many seasons. We aim to influence our customers to make more creative and considered choices in order to minimise energy usage and waste; and reduce our environmental impact by steering away from a throwaway culture of fast fashion.

Our core fabric is made from ECONYL® nylon fibres that have been regenerated from fishing nets and other post-consumer waste including plastic water bottles and thrown-out carpets. An initiative that recovers abandoned nets left on coral reefs and ocean floors to create new materials for repurposing and rejuvenating underwater ecosystems.

95% of our materials in our swimwear are supplied from Italy. The lesser 5% are carefully sourced from suppliers in China and Indonesia.

The Process

Rescue
It works like this: Fishing nets and post-consumer materials like plastic water bottles are collected, sorted, cleaned and shredded into small pieces in order to recover as much of the nylon as possible.

Rejuvenate
The rescuing of post consumer waste and fishing nets is an initiative in order to help rejuvenate underwater life.

Regenerate
The small pieces of nylon are then melted into a liquid through a regeneration process. The pieces are then turned into strands of polyester or nylon. The nylon waste is recycled right back to its purity so the regenerated nylon is exactly the same as the virgin nylon.

Remake
The regenerated nylon is processed into yarns ready to be used in textile and upholstery industries.

Reimagine
The regenerated nylon known as Econyl is then used to make our gorgeous swim and bring to you PALM swimwear. It all sounds like a lot of work, but you will be pleased to know that it takes less energy to make recycled fibres than it does to make virgin fibres. Recycled fibres has a 75% lower carbon footprint than virgin materials and uses up to 90% less water.

Here at PALM the design and production of our garments is of the utmost importance. We work daily and directly with our skilled team of artisans working in-house from our studio space in Bali, Indonesia. Our collections are all produced here, where we proudly adhere to fair living wages, realistic deadlines and sustainable manufacturing practices. We take a lot of pride in the relationships we have developed with our makers over the last few years. Meet our Makers here!
